How to back up your X (Twitter) bookmarks before they disappear
X bookmarks are pointers, not copies. When the underlying post is deleted, the author goes private, or the account is suspended, your bookmark quietly dies with it — the save remains, the content is gone. If your bookmarks hold real value, a backup isn't paranoia; it's the only version you actually own.
Method 1 — the official data archive
Settings → Your account → "Download an archive of your data." X compiles it (this can take a day or more) and emails you a link. The archive includes your bookmark data among everything else. Honest limits: it's a snapshot that's stale the moment it's generated, the format is developer-ish (JSON inside the download, not a friendly document), and already-deleted posts are already gone — an archive can't recover what died before you requested it.
Method 2 — manual copies of the irreplaceable
For the handful of saves you'd genuinely mourn: copy the text (or screenshot) into your notes tool now. Crude, immediate, and it's the only method that preserves content in a form you fully control. Nobody sustains this for a whole list, which is fine — do it for the top 10, not the top 500.
Method 3 — continuous sync
The set-and-forget option: a tool that syncs bookmarks out of X on an ongoing basis, so each save is captured near save-time rather than at whenever-you-remembered time. IdeaCoach's Chrome extension does this — your bookmarks flow into your IdeaCoach account as you save, where they're readable, searchable, and chat-able even if the original post later disappears. (No extension? Paste-in works too; it's just point-in-time rather than continuous.) Since the point of the pile is using it, the backup doubling as an idea engine and searchable second brain is the practical difference from a JSON file in your downloads folder.
Frequently asked questions
Does the X data archive include full bookmark content?
It includes your bookmark data as stored by X, in JSON form inside the download. Posts deleted before the archive was generated are not recoverable through it.
How often should I re-download the archive?
If it's your only backup, monthly is reasonable for an active saver — but each request takes a day or more to fulfill, which is why continuous sync exists.
If a post is deleted, does IdeaCoach still have my copy?
Bookmarks synced before the deletion remain in your IdeaCoach account. Nothing can back up a post that was deleted before you ever synced it.
