How to clean up your X (Twitter) bookmarks without losing the good ones
A bookmark list past a few hundred items stops being a resource and becomes sediment. Cleaning it up feels overdue — but X gives you no bulk-delete, no sort, and no way to see what's stale. Here's a process that works within those limits, plus how to make sure the cleanup doesn't destroy the value you were saving in the first place.
What X actually lets you do
Removal is one-at-a-time: open the post, tap the bookmark icon to un-save. There is no select-all, no "remove older than," no archive. (X has at times offered a 'delete all bookmarks' option in some apps — the nuclear route — but nothing in between.) So any real cleanup is a triage exercise, and your scarce resource is decision energy, not taps.
The keep/kill rule
Work newest-to-oldest in sessions of 20–30, and apply one question per save: "If I hadn't saved this, would I go looking for it today?" Yes → it's a keeper; extract it (copy to notes, or leave it knowing your retrieval tool can find it). No → un-save without ceremony. Anything that's expired discourse, old news, or a tool you never tried and no longer want — kill. Expect to keep well under half; that's normal, not failure.
Critical order of operations: extract or back up BEFORE any mass cleanup. Deleted bookmarks are gone — X has no trash folder or undo for un-saves you regret next month.
The cleanup that makes cleanups unnecessary
The deeper fix is making the pile size irrelevant. If your bookmarks sync into a tool that reads and indexes them — IdeaCoach does this via extension or paste-in — then stale saves stop costing you anything: search and chat surface the good material regardless of how much sediment sits around it, and the AI's idea-ranking pass effectively runs the keep/kill triage for the business-relevant saves automatically. Clean up for hygiene if it feels good; you no longer have to do it to make the list usable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bulk-delete X bookmarks?
There's no in-app multi-select. Removal is per-post, with the occasional all-or-nothing "delete all" option — nothing in between without third-party tooling.
Should I delete bookmarks or just leave them?
If a tool indexes your saves, leaving them costs nothing. If you rely on scrolling the raw list, ruthless deletion is the only thing that keeps it usable.
How do I back up before cleaning?
Request your X data archive (Settings → Your account → Download an archive of your data) or sync your saves to an external tool first. Then delete freely.
